Once considered a rather eccentric color to paint a home, blue is becoming more popular these days. Whether it is the resurgence of a more detailed housing exterior featuring more “gingerbread”, such as Victorian, or just the fact that blue is many people’s favorite color, blue houses are popping up more and more.

There are several good reasons for this. The blue palette can range from calming to electric. This leaves lots of variations if you plan to use all blue shades on your exterior. Blue matches and contrasts well with many other colors. There are not a lot of people who dislike blue, or who find it a depressing color. A neighborhood of strictly brown houses can get a little weighty on the optimism. A neighborhood of too many green houses can start to make a person feel a bit sick to the stomach. Blue, on the other hand, is pleasant.

Where your house is situated should also be a consideration when pondering the shade of blue to paint it. If you live in the desert, then a cool light shade of blue will refresh every eye that beholds it. Because the sun fades paint rather quickly there, paint it a couple of shades deeper than the color you want; you’ll get the color of your dreams in a year or so. If you live in a wetter or colder climate, you could go with a deep, rich blue that will, strangely enough, look warm, and will help the gray skies look a little more colorful. Go for a brighter color for the contrast, such as a sunny yellow, for a bit of cheerfulness.

A bright lapis blue would look nice in a cityscape that is mostly brown or gray. A nice robin’s egg blue is a very welcoming color that would look nice in the suburbs, or a house surrounded by a lovely garden, if you’re the green thumb type.

Then there’s the shock value. Perhaps that should be rephrased. If you live in a large city, an “artist’s colony”, or a tourist area, some folks want their house to stand out and be noticed. An electric blue with saffron contrast would do the trick. Apple green or school bus yellow would also work as a contrasting color.

You can let your imagination run wild and still find a shade of blue to match it.

Painting a kid’s room is a fun way to add a little spunk to it. There are plenty of ways to paint a room, and sometimes it can be difficult to decide the best way to paint your child’s room. The following are some fun places to find ideas for painting a kid’s room.

At your local home improvement store: If you walk to the paint department in your local home improvement store, they likely have someone that sits at a desk there. This person is going to be the paint expert, and they are trained to offer advice and tips. Some home improvement stores have planning or design centers with complimentary professionals that will help you come up with a plan or design for your kid’s room. So, take advantage of this free advice. If you are not interested in free advice, you may find that the pictures on the paint chip samples are inspiration enough to help you figure out what you want to do in your kid’s room.

In magazines: Home design and decorating magazines are a great place to find painting ideas for kid’s rooms. The photos in the layouts of these magazines are of rooms that have been professionally decorated, often with no expense spared. Even if you can’t duplicate the room or paint ideas exactly because of your budget, they do make a great source of inspiration. In some cases they will even have simple to follow instructions for how to recreate the look they created. If nothing else they can help you figure out good color combinations, and fun ideas for painting. For example, you may see a room painted as solid color, then painted over with big polka dots for a fun look. Or, you might see a room painted blue with white bubbles painted on top to look like a bath tub, etc. Decorating magazines can be picked up at your local grocery store for under $5, and are a great resource for painting ideas for kid’s rooms.

Model homes: Have you ever walked through a model home just to see if they had any decorating tips you could glean? They are a great place to look for paint ideas for kid’s rooms. They often use fun designs, and are more daring than you might be on your own, thus you can see that the risks are worth it, or in some cases, not worth it.

Online: The Internet is always a valuable resource when you are looking for ideas or inspiration, no matter what for. You can go online and search photo galleries of kid’s rooms, or type in “painting ideas” on a search engine, and spend hours browsing the results.

Ads and flyers: Many promotional ads and flyers for furniture stores have pictures of room layouts that they use to entice buyers and to help them see potential. Often times the little snippet of the wall you can see in the ad is enough inspiration to get you painting fun designs, or using cool techniques.

Design and decorating books: Of course, much like home decorating magazines, books created just for home decorating and design will have a section on kid’s rooms, and should offer some great advice on how to paint a kid’s room for a fun, fresh, look.

From your child: If you really want great paint ideas for your kid’s room that will fit your child, ask your child. They may tell you that their ideal room is painted like a jungle with foliage and animals. They may tell you that as long as it is a certain paint color they do not care, or they may just want to have fun with the walls and paint them multi-colors, striped, etc. Ask your child for their input.

Stripping paint is one of the jobs that do it yourselfers love to hate. It is tedious, time consuming, and just plain hard work. Luckily there are some tools available which will make the work easier.

Your first weapon should be a chemical paint stripper, especially for stubborn layers of older paint. There are many brand name stripping compounds available that are quite effective and easy to use. You’ll need to be sure to wear protective gear, though; rubber gloves, long sleeves and pants, and goggles are a must. Spread newspaper or plastic tarp on adjacent areas to avoid any spillover, as well.

Using an old paint brush, a liberal coat of stripper compound is applied, and left on per the manufacturer’s instructions until the paint softens. Then, using a paint stripper knife or shave hook tool, scraping the paint off is relatively easy. When all the paint has been removed (and I mean all of it, don’t be lazy here), clean the wood with either cold water or paint thinner; this will neutralize the chemicals left behind by the stripper.

Electric Paint Strippers

Another tool in your arsenal is the electric paint stripper. This is a handy little scraping tool that has an integral heating element. The element heats up when switched on, and as you hold the tool a certain distance from the paint, it softens it up. I find this tool is more useful for small sections of real stubborn paint than for large areas.

Blow Torch

When all else fails, the gas or kerosene blow torch works wonders. Just use extreme caution when using one of these bad boys. All flammable material needs to be removed from the immediate area. Burning paint chips will be falling down all over the place, so keep on eye on them and make sure they extinguish immediately. Also, it is easy to burn the underlying wood, so never hold the torch in one place too long; keep it moving. You are trying to soften and melt the paint, not incinerate your house.

Blow torches are usually only used for total stripping, where badly damaged coats of paint need to be stripped all the way to the wood. They are also used on fine molding and scrollwork that has been obscured by too many paint coats.

Start at the bottom and work your way upward, applying heat by moving the flame across the paint until it blisters and softens in a small area. Then remove the flame. Scrape away the softened paint, using a stripper knife on flat surfaces or a shave hook for moldings and corners. When the stripping is finished, sand down the wood by hand, with sandpaper.

Of course, the best and most valuable tool, although quite hard to find, is having lots of willing friends and family members to help you. If you have enough of these you don’t need to do any work at all, except buying the beer and pizza.
